The Patient Initiator Card is a disposible laminated card for limited English-proficient patients to use while they are at a health care facility. Durable and double-sided, the images on each card represent basic patient's needs. The patient shows the card to a staff member and points to what he/she needs. The staff would respond to their need and/or use ProLingua to discuss their needs further. The instructions for the patient on how to use these cards is included in ProLingua and spoken in the patient's language. The Patient Initiator Card, while simple in concept, provides a powerful tool to give patients some sense of control in an otherwise disempowering situation.
