As a pharmacist, preventing medication errors is critical to patient safety.
Most medication errors occur because patients misunderstand how to take their medications correctly. According to the Institute of Medicine, more than 90 million adults in the United States have difficulty understanding their medication instructions because of low health literacy. Now imagine what it must be like, if they couldn’t speak English. As your patient population becomes more diverse, you need a cost-effective solution to quickly provide information that your patients can easily understand and follow – a resource that addresses both low health literacy as well as foreign languages.
And as many medications become more complicated to use, demonstrating proper medication techniques during counseling will be even more important. We can no longer hope that they figure out how to use it correctly on their own.
